pIR HEG

Dr Jeffrey Carmen's pIR HEG (Passive Infra-Red Haemo-Encephalo-Graphy) biofeedback reflects the temperature, or heat, radiating from the forehead precisely. This can indicate the trainee's blood flow to the brain’s frontal lobe and let the individual know when this has reduced, a proxy for a drop in the amount of the blood flow to the forehead or a change in state.

The ‘Frontal lobe of the brain’ is a simple concept. It can be considered as the chariot driver, as it regulates the rest of the brain. Often, when emotions overtake people, the blood flow to the frontal lobes decreases and can be diverted to the limbic system, a.k.a. the emotional brain area. When we get overwhelmed with emotions, it can be difficult for our brain to continue performing optimally or regulating its functions such as attention, planning, rational thinking, desire, impulse control, empathy, verbal short-term memory, motor speech, or coordination of our voluntary movements.

This training involves placing an infrared temperature sensor on the forehead and monitoring the temperature while watching a video clip. When the temperature or the blood flow decreases, a thermometer-style graphic pops up on the screen for the trainee to train the blood flow to return to the frontal part of the brain. By normalising this blood flow, one may be able to support brain regulation or optimal functions mentioned above.

As we strengthen the connections between our rational and emotional mind centres, we enter a better balanced, complete and psychologically optimal state. This unification of our rational thoughts and feelings has effects that transcend mere symptom relief. A flourishing arises, which supports us throughout our lifespan to improve the overall quality of our lives.

The initial session is usually around 45 minutes, and the subsequent training sessions are up to 30 minutes.
